Mountains of Madness – linocut

This is my first fully original drawing and print. I am a huge fan of the Cthulhu Mythos and all things Lovecraftian. I wanted to do a homage to the story At the Mountains of Madness so I drew some basic mountain shapes, added some tentacles, a beckoning cave and some Elder Things flying overhead.

It was my first time ever trying to create the shapes of something like a mountain using lines carved in the solid background. Normally I’ve only done line drawings this is more complex. I also saw a wide bordered print by another artist with an ivy design and thought it would make a wonderful surround for the image with some mythos-like symbols. I think this gives the appearance of a page from the dread Necronomicon.

Drawn freehand with pencil and then I used yellow highlighter to make the carving easier to track.

About half way carved before detailing the mountains.

Test print. I'm really happy with the way it looks, just need to do better job of inking when I do it for real.
