After 5 months without any capability to work (stuff was in storage) I set up my work room and set out to create a new image that I had planned on starting before the move but never got to.
Mutant (as in Metaluna Mutant) is a monster from the classic 1955 sci-fi movie This Island Earth. I really liked this monster because he was
A) weird looking and
B) very textural which lends itself to the varied mark making of linocut.
I used a drawing I found online for the pose itself and used that as the outline of the shape and then did all the details within from production stills from the movie.
I think he came out rather good IMHO. I liked what happened with my cross hatching on the ‘brain’ portion of his head. It definitely made the mottled appearance I wanted when printed.
Now keep in mind that what I’m showing here is a first proof test print. It’s not the best printing as I needed more ink and more pressure when rubbing a few areas but it came out well enough to determine if it was a good image. I’ve cleaned up a bit more of the background ‘chatter’ since this so when I print for real it will have a little less noise behind the monster in the blank space. I’ll probably use him to make myself tee shirts and stuff. It wouldn’t be for sale since I based it on another person’s art.
I’m still trying to figure out what to do for my own shtick: skulls? tentacles? classic movie monsters? come up with my own monster? I think I’m finally reaching the skill point where I need to figure out how to use my new talents for products.
